Made It

Long day of travel but glad to be here. Left Salt Lake on the 5pm direct to Paris with a connection to Venice. Took the water taxi to a stop about a block from our apartment. We had to wait for a bit for the woman to show up with the key but even though we were tired - I can never sleep on planes - the place was perfect. There are large windows in every room that let in a huge amount of light and you look out into a private garden that is next to a church and on a canal. What isn't on a canal in Venice, right? It's in a quiet part of town meaning no bustling tourists and 2 blocks away a street, on a canal, lined with restaurants.

I love renting apartments on holiday. It feels like a wonderful immediate immersion into the country. Granted no room service or concierges but people walking their dogs, people carrying home groceries yelling at their neighbors I suspect about their day - of course they must set their bags down because the meaning would be lost without using their hands - is what traveling abroad is about.

We are enjoying cocktail time a little late. We have become seasoned travelers I suspect because we know to buy gin at the duty free shop in the Salt Lake City airport so we don't have to go on an exhaustive search at the end of a long travel day to make a decent drink. We also bring an ice cube tray - Europeans aren't big on ice cubes -so we have something clinking in our glasses. The key is to get to a destination and put your feet up. We will sleep well.
